Young Carers

The Carers Lewisham Young Carers Service supports children and young people aged between 5-25 years old who look after parent(s), sibling(s) or other relatives/friends who are disabled, ill, have mental ill health or a drug or alcohol problem. Young Carers Programme (5-15)

Our Young Carers Programme partners with local agencies, schools, and other specialist support services so we can identify and support Young Carers and their families from any background in our local community.

We provide a friendly and accessible service which includes:

  • Holiday Club respite trips during term breaks (except Christmas)
  • A once-a-week after-school drop-in programme (4-6pm) at our office during term time
  • Signposting to targeted support services
  • Coordinating family supports with social services and schools
  • Assistance with applying for small grants and additional supports
  • Home or school visits for new referrals (as needed)
  • Raising awareness about Young Carers/ Young Adult Carers around Lewisham

Young Adult Carers Programme (16-25)

Our Young Adult Carers Programme partners with local agencies, schools, and other specialist support services so we can identify and support Young Adult Carers and their families from any background in our local community.

Our Young Adult Carer services are focused on supporting young people as they transition into adulthood and include:

  • Group activities and social events with other Young Adult Carers
  • Volunteer and work experience opportunities at our office and working with our Young Carers (5-15)
  • Help with finding volunteer, apprentice, internship or paid work opportunities that match the career interests of the young person
  • Assistance with CV writing and interview preparation
  • Workshops in diverse topics such as well-being, financial literacy, and personal strengths development
  • Financial assistance with vocational training
  • Assistance with applying for small grants and additional supports
  • Signposting to targeted support services
  • Coordinating supports with schools and universities
  • Home or school visits for new referrals (as needed)
  • Raising awareness about Young Carers/ Young Adult Carers around Lewisham
