Every two years, councils in England have a statutory requirement to send a postal survey to a selection of carers known to social services. The 2018 survey is the fourth national survey. If you are receiving social services support then the Survey will be sent to a sample of you in early October. Receiving your views/feedback is valuable and very important. What the 2016 survey told us Planners and policy makers analyse the data submitted for important indications of change for our population of carers.  Lewisham’s 2016 data suggested: + Significant positive change (2014 to 2016) :

  • fewer people caring over 100 hours per week;
  • fewer people dealing with care services and benefits;
  • fewer people reporting that they were not involved in discussions about the person they care for;

 Significant negative change (2014 to 2016):

  • more people reporting that they care and have a physical impairment (18.7% to 20.7%) or a long-standing illness (23.4% to 32.6%)

Please note the use of the word ‘significant’ is a statistical term and means it is a noteworthy change in the given population.  It is always important to look at facts and figures in context. What we are doing in response

  • Encouraging carers to make contact with the local carers centre for guidance and advice, through updated carer information pages, outreach & promotion from the carer centre to individuals, communities and professionals;
  • Improving the online carers assessment information, to capture relevant information about quality of life (QoL) issues affecting carers;
  • Working with a patient reference group to promote to people who may not self-identify as a carer but experience issues as a carer ;
